Executive Officers

President
Morgan Peterson (she/her)
Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering
Minor: Psychology
Graduation Date: May 2026

As President, I oversee the wellbeing of the section and spread SWE's mission in the College of Engineering and beyond. I regularly communicate with company representatives to forge new relationships and secure sponsorships, as well as represent our section with national SWE correspondence, in order to provide our members with a variety of perspectives and opportunities. Furthermore, I support the entire officer board to pilot fresh ideas, optimize existing initiatives, and organize events for the general body.
Within my major of ISE, I am focused on Systems Engineering within Oceanic and Naval Systems. Being from a Navy family, it is my goal to someday work to support the US military and work on Nuclear Submarines.
Outside of SWE, I am a member of my campus ministry's mission's team, a sister of Alpha Sigma Kappa Women in Technical Studies, and a volunteer at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
In addition, I enjoy reading or watching movies and playing games with my best friends.

Vice President
Zahra Alam (she/her)
Major: Chemical Engineering
Minor: Economics
Graduation Date: May 2026

As Vice President, I organize professional events for VT SWE with our company sponsors. I'm responsible for hosting all General Body Meetings as well as Professional Development events and Company Socials. I consider myself the bridge between company representatives and our members. I also assist with Exec Board duties and other officers!
Outside of SWE, I'm an active member of Alpha Omega Epsilon, a sorority for women in STEM, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. In my free time, I enjoy arts and crafts, traveling, trying new restaurants, and binging TV shows. I'm also a matcha fiend!

As Secretary, I send out the weekly newsletters to keep our members up to date about what our section is doing, community events, and all of the amazing opportunities available to you as members of SWE!

Anita Raja (she/her)

As Treasurer, I am responsible for the collection, distribution, and safekeeping of the section's funds. I also prepare and maintain our financial reports and budgets to ensure we have the financial strength to create opportunities for more students in our section.

CAMEO Liaison
Haile Mistry (she/her)
Major: Chemical Engineering

As CAMEO Liaison, I work with other students representing the Council for the Advancement of Minority Engineering Organizations to plan collaborative events and organize the CAMEO CareerFest in February.
Outside of SWE, I'm involved in undergraduate research, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and VT Dhamaal. In my free time, I love traveling, hiking, and trying new recipes. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Community Outreach Chair
Claudia Sanna (she/her)
Major: Mechanical Engineering

As Community Outreach Chair, I am responsible for organizing events that connect SWE with the surrounding community. Through these events, SWE is able to give back to our community that gives us unwavering support. All SWE events are volunteer-based and seek to assist current standing organizations and charities in and around Blacksburg. I am also responsible for coordinating SWE's involvement in events such as Gobblerfest, O-Show, Women's Preview Weekend, and The Big Event.
Outside of SWE, I am involved in Baja SAE and do undergraduate research in soft robotics at the Naughton Lab. In my free time, I enjoy bouldering, snowboarding, and playing board games!

Conference Chair
Emily Sandt (she/her)
Major: Civil Engineering

As conference chair, I am responsible for planning our group's trip to the annual national SWE conference. More specifically, my roles include, booking hotels, going over applications, hosting logistics meetings, and coordinating travel plans for our members!
Outside of SWE, I am involved in the Student Engineers' Council, the STEM sorority, Alpha Omega Epsilon, American Society of Civil Engineers, the College of Engineering's Dean's Team, and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Ambassadors. In my free time, I love painting, binging shows, playing board games, golfing, or jumping to Enter Sandman at Hokie football games!

Educational Outreach Chair

As the Educational Outreach Committee chair, I work with K-12 schools, scouting troops, and other educational programs across the New River Valley area and beyond to promote women in STEM and engineering! My role consists of planning these outreach events, being a liaison between K-12 program leaders and SWE, and ensuring our events run smoothly while providing an enriching experience for the young women.

Evening with the Industries Chair

As the Evening With the Industries Chair for SWE, I am responsible for planning and executing SWE's Evening With the Industries event. This event takes place the week before the CAMEO career fest and acts as a networking opportunity for company representatives and SWE/CAMEO members. I'm excited to be able to organize this networking opportunity for our SWEsters!

SEC Chair
Katie Murnane (she/her)

As Student Engineers Council (SEC) Representative, I am the point of contact between SWE and SEC. I attend SEC meetings and report back to SWE executives and members. I apply for SEC funding to help put on different SWE events throughout the year. I also facilitate SWE involvement in E-week.
Outside of SWE, I am also involved in MCA at Virginia Tech and IISE. I love traveling, going to the gym, cooking, and hanging out with friends. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Social Committee Chair
Mianna Ly (she/her)
Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering

As Social Chair, I am responsible for planning and executing all social events, including the SWE End-of-Year Picnic at the end of the spring semester. I also help plan the SWE Ball. My goal is to create a fun environment where members can bond and strengthen our community.
Outside of SWE, I am a part of Engineers Without Borders, the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and the STEM sorority Alpha Omega Epsilon. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball, trying new foods, listening to music, and staying active with my friends.​
