Meet Our Officers

President
Erin Freck
Major: Computer Engineering
Minors: Computer Science, Cybersecurity
Graduation Date: May 2023
As President, I oversee the section and communicate with company representatives to secure sponsorships and forge new relationships. I also support both the officer board to help organize events, pilot new ideas, and plan meetings for the general body. My final role is to communicate the purpose of SWE to other organizations on campus to help spread our influence and message of diversity.
Outside of SWE, I am a part of the BOLT Electric Motorcycle Design and the IT Security Lab. Additionally, I am a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies and was a member of the Galipatia Living Learning Community for three years. Beyond engineering, I enjoy playing viola in a small music group, playing volleyball with my friends, and hiking around Blacksburg. Vice President
Lucy Waite
Major: Aerospace Engineering
Minor: Math
Graduation Date: May 2024
As Vice President, I serve as bridge between company representatives and the general members of our section. I communicate to our sponsors to organize and host our general body meetings, as well as assist the President when needed.
Outside of SWE, I am a pilot, avid baker, gymnast on the VT Club Team, and a hiker. You can find me making sourdough or cakes and sometimes hiking on Blacksburg's many trails on the weekend. I also love doing movie and dinner nights with my friends, and hanging out with my fellow SWEsters when I can. Oh, and I love animals :) I'm currently a Junior in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Math, and I hope to work on NASA projects one day.
Feel free to reach out anytime about anything and everything! Whether it be to hang out, get advice, or just need a listening ear, I'm here!

Secretary
Mariko Hart
Major: Civil Engineering
Minor: Computer Science
Graduation Date: May 2024
As Secretary, I send out the weekly newsletters keeping our members up to date about what our section is doing, community events, and various opportunities available to them. I also keep track of attendance for our general body meetings.
Outside of SWE, I'm the Academic Committee Liaison for Galipatia and a peer tutor with the Student Success Center. I hope to use my engineering degree to positively impact people and the environment. To relax, I enjoy doing puzzles (jigsaw, Sudoku, minesweeper, basically any type), listening to excessively long video essays, and hanging out with friends.

Treasurer
Hiba Sayed
Major: Computer Science
Minor: Mathematics
Graduation Date: May 2024
As Treasurer I am responsible for the collection, distribution, and safekeeping of the section's funds. I also prepare and maintain financial reports as well as file taxes on behalf of the section. I hope to increase transparency of the section's funds in this position to enable new ideas and increased impact by our organization.
At Virginia Tech, I am also a CS Ambassador, Dean's Team member, and a member of the Infinitum Design Team. I am very passionate about increasing diversity in STEM and like to spend my time volunteering in various initiatives in my local community as well as in Blacksburg. In my free time I love to spend time in nature along with watching Marvel movies and TV shows.

I am also involved in the Center for Engineering Enhancement and Diversity, acting as an organizer and Peer Leader of the Undergraduate Peer Mentoring Program and a part of the Dean's Team. Social Committee Chair
Reilly Oare
Major: Biological Systems Engineering

As Social Committee Chair, I'm in charge of organizing and hosting social events for SWE at VT. My goal is to grow SWE relationships by holding social events that can give members the opportunity to connect over shared interests and fun experiences. I am excited to create spaces where members can feel included, safe, and cared for!
Outside of SWE, I am a member of the Rock Climbing Club at Virginia Tech and a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. I am president of the Coalition for Christian Outreach on campus, and I currently work as an undergraduate research assistant in the Biological Systems Engineering department. During my free time, I love to rock climb, cook, throw pottery, knit, and lift (basically anything I'm stoked on at the moment)! I would love to grab a coffee and make some new friends, so please feel free to reach out!

Community Outreach Chair
Elise Turka

As Community Outreach Chair, I organize events (called S2S) centered around community outreach. These events are volunteer-based and often assist missions located in or around Blacksburg! I also attend both Gobblerfest and O-Show to tell freshman and other women-engineers about SWE as well as look for some new members! My final role is to attend meetings to assist in planning for general body meetings.
Outside of SWE, I enjoy reading, hanging out with friends, tutoring students in Calculus and Chemistry (check out the Student Success Center for help!), and mentoring students as a part of CEED.

Educational Outreach Chair
Allie Huszcza
Major: Materials Science and Engineering Minors: Biomedical Engineering and Chemistry
Graduation Date: May 2025
As the Educational Outreach Committee chair, I work with K-12 schools, scouting troops, and other educational programs across the New River Valley area and beyond to promote women in STEM and engineering! My role consists of planning these outreach events (along with the incredible education outreach committee), being a liaison between K-12 program leaders and SWE, and ensuring our events run smoothly while providing an enriching experience for the young women.
Outside of SWE, I am involved with undergraduate research, various CEED positions, Alpha Sigma Kappa, and I mentor my old robotics team! In my free time (when I have any), I love to hang out with friends, watch Netflix documentaries, and do anything crafty! Specifically, I love to embroider and crochet.

Megan Gulian

As Publicity Chair, my role involves maintaining all SWE social media accounts and marketing our exciting SWE events! One of my biggest goals is to expand the content that our SWE members get from social media as well as show others everything that we do. Be sure to follow us on Instagram, @swe_vt!
Outside of SWE, I am on the VT Club Tennis Team, a Honors College Peer Advisor, a member of a VT professional sorority, and volunteer at the VT Equine Center! In my free time, I love to go camping and hiking on the weekends, spending time with friends, and exploring Blacksburg! I'm majoring in Biomedical Engineering with plans to pursue veterinary school. I am so excited to be a part of SWE this year and feel free to reach out anytime!

SEC Chair
Makayla Wonpat

Hi! As the Student Engineers' Council (SEC) Representative for SWE, I'm the bridge between SWE and the SEC. I attend monthly SEC meetings and inform the SWE officers of opportunities, updates, and other information from the SEC. Also, I'm responsible for applying for funding from the SEC so our club can create great events and experiences.
Outside of SWE, I enjoy creating art, playing volleyball, listening to music (love indie/alternative), thrifting, and spending time with friends. I also like to stay active (hiking, longboarding, working out, etc.). I'm a member of Art Club at Virginia Tech, and I'm planning to get involved with other organizations and undergraduate research as well. Feel free to contact me with questions or just to chat! :)

Evening with the Industries Chair

As EWI Chair, I am responsible for coordinating the Evenings with Industries Event. From finding and booking a venue to coordinating dates and invites, I will be putting together this event for the spring semester.

Hi! My name is Vitha Anumolu and I will the 2021/2022 CAMEO Representative. I'll be responsible for assisting in planning the CAMEO careerfest. "CAMEO" stands for the Council for the Advancement of Minority Engineering Organizations, an umbrella organization that oversees various groups at Virginia Tech!
Outside of SWE, I am involved with the Student Engineers' Council, ISE Ambassadors, Undergraduate Research, and am an avid sports fan! I love to try new foods and go on adventures with my friends. I enjoy meeting new people and experiencing new things, so I am excited to do just that within the Society of Women Engineers here at Virginia Tech. Go Hokies! :)

Conference Chair

As conference chair, I oversee the planning and recruitment for Virginia Tech’s SWE members for the national women in engineering conference in Houston, Texas. More specifically my role includes, booking hotels, going through applications, and coordinating travel plans for 20-24 members!
Outside of SWE, I am a CEED Peer Mentor and I am in a panhellenic sorority. I enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and family, and watching any show on HGTV!
